Three medications for travel
Most travelers will have a selection of over the counter remedies that will help them through a long haul flight. Here is a list of the most common travel maladies, together with suggested remedies.
Deep vein thrombosis – This is a condition, which can be fatal and involves a blood clot to develop in the leg. This can occur on any flight where movement is restricted. The best way to reduce DVT is to stand up, stretch and walk around the cabin.
Motion sickness – Motion sickness is caused by irregular and abnormal motion that causes organs to be off balance. The imbalance occurs in the inner ear and can cause nausea, dizziness, headaches and cold perspiration to set in. The most common motion sickness remedies include Dramamine (Dimenhydrinate) and Bonine (Meclizine). You can also use a Transderm Scop (scopolamine). This is a patch that you have to stick behind your ear, to reduce inner ear activity.
Sleeping medications – With the noise levels in most airline cabins, people choose to take a sleep aid to help them get through a flight. It is best to try your sleep aid at home, weeks prior to your trip. This will give you an idea of how you feel during and after your dosage. Most travelers swear by Ambien (Zolpidem) because it does not leave you groggy on arrival. If you prefer something milder, take a well-timed dose of melatonin. A small dose for a person with strong sleep habits will help them sleep through a long haul flight.
